How CBD Can Improve Your Mental Health

Written by: Shelby Andrews

There is a lot of speculation around how cannabis products interact with mental illnesses. Often, customers come to us with many questions surrounding how cannabis and CBD can help or hinder mental illness, and how the two react differently with your brain.

Like most conversations around cannabis, this is a complex topic that is often associated with an undeserved, negative stigma. For example, did you know that CBD is actually one of the best (and most natural) ways to treat mental illnesses?

Read on to learn how THC and CBD interact with the brain:

Cannabis and psychosis: a brief overview

After decades of research on whether or not THC triggers mental illnesses such as psychosis, scientists have revealed that most people with psychosis disorders feel the same euphoric “high” that anyone feels.  However, while there are many contributing factors to consider, it’s possible that THC could exaggerate symptoms (especially when consumed at high doses), and that users with psychosis may be more sensitive to THC and are more likely to feel extreme ups and downs with consumption.

What does this mean for CBD users?

CBD (cannabidiol) is a chemical compound found in the cannabis plant (usually the stem, flower and seeds). It contains NO tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), therefore it is 100% anti-psychoactive and can NOT get you high.

CBD on its own doesn’t interact with the amygdala (the part of your brain involved with how you process and express emotions – especially fear and anger), which means increased psychosis is nothing to worry about when taking CBD.

So, how can CBD help my mental health?

CBD helps regulate and optimize the release of some of the most crucial neurotransmitters (a substance that sends nerve impulses) throughout our brain and body—neurotransmitters that our emotions, mood and mental clarity depend on.

More specifically, CBD helps control the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and glutamate.

  • Serotonin helps regulate mood
  • Dopamine influences our reward centres
  • Glutamate is a key player when it comes to dealing with anxiety and depression. It’s also important for memory and learning

CBD for depression and anxiety

While THC and anxiety often don’t mix well together, despite being derived from the same plant, CBD can significantly lower the symptoms and effects of anxiety and depression.

CBD for sleep disorders

There has been an extreme spike in demand of using CBD tinctures for sleep. CBD oil can also help regulate the anxiety-induced alteration often accompanied by REM sleep.

CBD for PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

CBD plays a crucial role in managing “fear memory” in those who suffer from PTSD. It also plays a crucial role in lowering hypervigilance (being overly-alert) and recurring nightmares.
