The health and environmental benefits of the hemp plant are no secret. Information about the plant has become increasingly available over the past few years, and has become a popular topic in our society.

If you’re new to the world of hemp, you’re probably unaware of how many every-day products it can substitute. This week, we’re sharing a few of our favourite, most interesting examples.

Clothing and shoes

Many clothing companies – take TenTree, for example— are turning to hemp when making apparel and shoes. It creates a soft, cozy and durable material, and it’s great for the environment.

Paper

While most paper is made from wood pulp, it’s actually more productive to make it with hemp (because it’s much faster to grow a crop of hemp than it is to grow a forest of trees).

Sunscreen

While hemp can’t actually block the sun’s UV rays, it does make an excellent base for sunscreen products. The fact that it’s great for your skin is just a bonus.

Rope

This is no secret. People have been using hemp for over 10 thousand years, and rope was one of the earliest uses.

CBD Oil

CBD (or Cannabidiol) is one of over 100 compounds in the cannabis or hemp plant. CBD is an anti-psychoactive. There are two groups of cannabinoid receptors inside the body; CB1 and CB2. The CBD molecule helps activate receptors in the body, such as adenosine, serotonin and vanilloid. These receptors help the body produce dopamine (which regulates mood, memory and pain perception) and glutamate (which helps with brain cognitive function in the body).

Making CBD oil with hemp allows us to benefit from the effects of CBD without the intoxicating effects of THC.

Milk

Whether you’re vegan, have a lactose intolerance, or just prefer to go dairy-free when you can, hemp milk is a nutritious and tasty replacement. This dairy alternative can be made from the plant’s seeds and are a great way to further going green with your diet.

Soaps

The high volume of fatty substances  in the hemp plant make it a premium ingredient for high-quality soaps. Again, for those of you who prefer vegan and/or environmentally friendly products, we highly suggest making the switch.

Sports cars

Yes, you read that right. Sports cars. Approximately one year ago, Jay Leno’s Garage featured Leno driving The Renew Sports Car, a sports car with a body made out of hemp. The vehicle design uses hemp fibers that have been woven together and covered with a hard, solid resin.

Protein Powder

Hemp seeds are one of the most nutrient-rich foods available to us. They’re an excellent food to incorporate into your diet – the seeds are rich in healthy fats, minerals and protein. But most importantly, they taste delicious and are an extremely versatile food – you can add them to almost anything!

Protein powder has become a common way for people to add hemp to their diet.
